Thinking about using CBD for relaxation? You’re not alone! There’s a lot about relaxation online and in magazines. It’s undoubtedly important, particularly during and after challenging periods of your life – like the past year is very likely to have been! But this aloof idea of achieving relaxation through (to many) seemingly unrealistic ideals of meditating throughout the day, taking naps or simply finding more time to get outside or be by yourself is annoying at best, and desperately unhelpful at worst. But the physical act of relaxation – actually thinking about what your body is doing when it relaxes and what you can do to support that process – may be more productive. Admittedly, yes, it takes away some of the romance of ‘self-care’, but who needs romance when you can see results instead!
Does CBD oil help you relax?
Cannabis has been used to aid relaxation for thousands of years. Now, CBD (which is usually derived from cannabis) is being favoured for much the same purpose, with a survey performed by Quartz showing relaxation tops the charts at 55% when asked about reason for use.
But just because it’s trending doesn’t mean we can just assume it works – that should come down to your own experience and the science behind it. We can help you with both, by supplying exceptional quality CBD products in the Elements of Green store and filling you in on everything you need to know about why it’s worth trying CBD for relaxation.
Using CBD for Relaxation
Whether you choose to incorporate any other exercises to evoke relaxation, it never hurts to support your body in general. Simply keeping everything in balance will make you feel ‘better’ overall and immediately more relaxed as a result.
So, how can a CBD supplement help with this?
To be relaxed, you really need to feel like everything is A-OK. This can be hard when you’re faced with daily stressors, headlines about climate change and constant Covid news! And it’s even harder if your mind and body are sensing imbalance in any other area too.
Fortunately, one of the most remarkable ways CBD interacts with the body is by supporting our in-built homeostatic regulator: The endocannabinoid system.
This complex network of receptors has the vital job of keeping everything (everything) in the body in balance. Its receptors can be found in every skin cell, in our muscles and bones, in the brain, throughout all other physiological systems and even deep down in our mitochondrial cell walls. These are activated by our endocannabinoids (Anandamide, named for the Sanskrit word for bliss, and 2-AG are the two we are most familiar with) which are synthesised and released on demand to restore balance in any way (and anywhere) that’s needed.
Many cannabinoid researchers believe a good chunk of us are suffering from an endocannabinoid deficiency, triggered by stress, poor diet, lack of sleep and other lifestyle factors. When this occurs, we do not produce sufficient endocannabinoids, so the ECS can’t regulate bodily processes properly.
As you can imagine, this can put stress on the body and mind. But fortunately, taking CBD oil regularly and consistently can help kick our ECS back into action! By inhibiting the enzyme which breaks endocannabinoids down, and providing the body with other cannabinoids such as CBG, which directly activate ECS receptors, CBD encourages higher levels of endocannabinoids.
Is CBD Relaxing?
Hands up if you’ve come across meditation as a suggestion to help you relax. That’s pretty much everyone then! But did you know that a large part of the reason meditation helps you relax is because it provides you with an enormous endocannabinoid boost?
A study performed on 348 participants during a 4-day meditation and yoga retreat demonstrated that meditation significantly reduced depression and anxiety while improving happiness, mindfulness, and psychological well-being. At the same time, endocannabinoids increased immediately after meditation and those with over 20% increase in endocannabinoids also had significantly higher happiness levels! What’s more, the psychological effects of the meditation retreat were sustained for at least 1 month.
With this in mind, it’s fair to think of CBD as meditation in a bottle! But, using CBD for relaxation as you meditate is likely to be even better.
A Natural Serotonin Boost
Endocannabinoids are not the only neurotransmitters boosted by meditation: serotonin and dopamine levels are also commonly lifted, both of which can have considerable anti-depressant and relaxing effects. It’s not just noted during meditation, but also after a massage or osteopathic manipulation, from taking SSRIs, after exercising and as a result of taking CBD oil.
The CBD molecule, which is always the most abundant cannabinoid in CBD oil, directly activates serotonin and dopamine receptors, an action which has the potential to lift your mood, promote better sleep, increase libido and aid with relaxation.
Taking CBD is not the answer to all our problems, and if you’ve got something on your mind preventing you from relaxing then you’ll need to give yourself additional support. But by taking CBD every day to support your endocannabinoid system and activate serotonin and dopamine receptors, you may discover that finding the time to prioritise your own wellbeing, and reap the rewards that stem from that, comes with greater ease.
