CBD oil has gained even more popularity in recent years. Unlike its more psychoactive cousin THC, CBD does not cause the typical high associated with marijuana or hemp use. Instead, CBD helps alleviate pain, relaxes the mind, and provides anti-inflammatory support to help people maintain higher qualities of life. In this article, we ask the question on everyone’s minds: Is CBD safe?
How does CBD oil work?
CBD oil is extracted from the hemp plant that it is sourced from and repurposed into different types of consumable products. From standard oil bottles to more edible products like gummies, chewables, and capsules, CBD products are available to help improve your quality of life.
Over the years, people have used CBD to help treat or manage several physical and mental health conditions. It’s been proven that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a complex series of cells and neurotransmitters that help the body maintain its defenses. By binding itself to receptors that are part of the endocannabinoid system, CBD helps control the signals transmitted between those cells and the components of the brain that respond to pain. This helps desensitize areas of the body affected by inflammation as part of a healing process.
Since it has anti-inflammatory properties, CBD is often used for neuropathy to help rejuvenate frayed nerves throughout the body. Additionally, CBD has been used to treat ADHD to help improve the mind’s ability to focus. It also can control feelings of depression or anxiety which are common side effects of serious disorders like PTSD.
How to take CBD oil
How you take CBD products will depend on the type of product you choose. For example, CBD oils come in small bottles along with a dropper that helps you administer a dose into your body. You can apply a few small drops to the back of your tongue and swallow the oil so it enters your digestive system.
You’re not limited to just administering the oil directly onto your tongue. Some people will add a few drops of CBD oil to their morning coffee or tea. Simply stir the contents of the oil so they further dissolve into your drink of choice, and then you can sip the CBD oil at your own pace to ensure the product enters your system.
Straight up oils aren’t the only CBD product you can consume. Manufacturers have created more consumable products using CBD oil to provide more creative options for consumers. These include products like:
- CBD gummies that add a little sugary goodness to your treatment
- CBD capsules that are gel packets resembling over the counter medication
- CBD edibles that include multivitamins, tea blends, and delicious seltzers
Any of these consumable products can be enjoyed at your leisure. They all contain fixed doses of CBD oil that will help you reap the benefits of the product in a way that’s easy to enjoy and often delicious!
In addition to oils and edibles, you can topically apply CBD to your skin using creams, lotions, and balms. Simply take a dab of lotion and gently apply it to a sore or wounded part of your skin. The lotion will be absorbed by the cells in your body, allowing the CBD oil to interact with receptors in the endocannabinoid system to help you heal from your injury.
Is CBD safe?
Is CBD safe? Studies have been conducted to test the effectiveness and the safety of CBD oil as part of a regular form of treatment. To date, there has been only one FDA approved CBD therapy, and that’s a drug known as Epidiolex. This is a drug that was developed to treat very rare forms of epilepsy, and the results from clinical trials encouraged the FDA to give the therapy an official seal of approval from that federal health department.
Similar studies are being undertaken to test if CBD can treat conditions like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and other forms of neurodegenerative diseases. However, the research remains very preliminary at the time of this writing. Unlike the Epidiolex treatment, more trials must be conducted to prove if CBD is, in fact, effective therapy for those disorders.
All that being said, people who have taken CBD for recreational use, to treat physical pain, or to relax their minds have mostly reported positive results. The safety and efficacy of CBD oil are not conclusive, but it does suggest to be more beneficial to people’s health than not.
Any known negative side effects of CBD oil?
For most CBD users, there are no notable side effects to point out. In some instances, people have reported feelings of dry mouth, fatigue, or exhaustion following their doses. Those are fairly minor symptoms that could point to a higher than healthy dose of CBD oil. Lowering the dosage could help alleviate those symptoms and make the therapy fully beneficial again.
One thing to note is that CBD can negate the effects of any medications you may take for other underlying conditions. If you are currently medicated and plan on taking CBD oil, it’s best to speak with your primary doctor before you begin. Your doctor will know more details about your medical history, and he or she may even be able to recommend the optimal dosage for you to take so that you can avoid some of those side effects.
Like with most things in life, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
